Review: Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Mattes

Drug store makeup has always betrayed me. I don’t know what it is, but time and time again it lets me down and leaves me disappointed and wishing I saved myself the $10. No matter what the YouTubers and beauty bloggers are saying, I never seem to have the same luck with the products. That all changed with these lipsticks!

I had been in the market for a deep, vampy, red, matte lipstick, and once again, the drugstore seemed to beckon for me. But this time, I was determined to not be suckered into another let down; so I resisted.  I searched the counters at all the stores; hunting for that perfect matte red, with blue undertones, that would look good on yellow (Asian) skin… And though I did find one or two that met my search criteria, I was hesitant about spending that much money on a color I wasn’t even sure that I would wear. Yes, I know you can take them back usually, but I just never do; so I wanted to make sure that it wouldn’t be too upsetting if I didn’t fall madly in love. Finally, after almost completely giving up on my quest, I stumbled upon these at my local Target and decided I had nothing to lose. I can say I have not been disappointed!

These lipsticks are awesome! They are true to their name and their creamy formula goes on incredibly smooth and easy. The color payout is also very impressive (the swatches above are after just one swipe on my hand). What is most exciting to me is that they are a true matte finish and do not dry out my lips at all. Usually, I find myself reaching for a gloss with any matte finish lipstick because my lips just feel so incredibly dry I can’t take it – but this was not the case here and I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was the formula great, but the color (Divine Wine) was exactly the shade I was going for! Hello, Autumn lip look! I was so impressed with this product that I went back and picked up another color (Touch of Spice) at the store shortly after trying the first.

My only complaint is that Maybelline lipsticks do not come sealed, so it did take me a while to find ones that had not been touched or used already. So if you decide to give any of them a try, make sure that you check before you buy!

Here is a quick summary of my thoughts!

* Creamy formula goes on very smooth
* Amazing color payout
* True matte finish
* Doesn’t dry out lips
* Surprisingly longwearing
* Pair it with a liner to avoid bleeding (I like Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Venom)
* They have an odd smell to them that I am not too fond of, but it’s not a deal breaker

One statement to wrap it all up: These are surprisingly awesome and definitely worth a try.
